Brian KM
Brian was able to explain things that my body was doing that inhibited my playing in a way that just made sense, and broke them down in ways that make you feel like you are capable of overcoming any blocks you're experiencing.

Teaching Philosophy

If we're not having fun out there on stage, I don't really know what we're doing anyway.
My goals as a teacher are to:
  • Empower students to find their free expression through the horn by squashing technical challenges with simple and straight forward problem solving skills

  • Encourage music making by helping to identify a student's individual ideas and placing them directly into the classical, romantic, and modern repertoire

  • Foster a rich connection between students and their ensemble music, ensuring that their relationship with the band or orchestra is exciting and fulfilling

  • Guide students through the process of developing their musical goals and dreams, and help them excecute!

I have over ten years of teaching experience working with students of all ages. I have lectured at and conducted masterclasses at the University level. I am able to draw upon years of touring and performing experience to deliver insightful and useful information to the student.

My first college degree was in Music Therapy, where I was trained in advanced task analysis to work with older adults with severe profound intellectual disabilities. Although horn students are very different, my therapeutic training has stayed with me, and I utilize the listening, communication, and problem solving skills that served me so well when working as a therapeutic clinician.

When I was on tour with the United States Navy's "Harbor Brass Quintet" while I was stationed with the U.S. Pacific Fleet Band, I worked with students all across the world in masterclasses and lessons. Meeting and working with new students is the spice of life, and fostering a long term relationship with horn students as they grow is the fizz in life's soda!
